- DR. WHO COLLECTORS' EDITION EPISODE GUIDE
As the first episode of the season introduced us to Rose, this episode told the audience more about who the Doctor is. As it looks at how different the Doctor is to Rose, it also looks at how different his lifestyle is when compared to the way hers was back on Earth. The Doctor enjoys showing Rose the advantages of the way he lives, but then, as Rose comes to know the Doctor more, she sees some disadvantages as well.
The episode starts off with the Doctor using his psychic paper to gain admittance to Platform One so he and Rose could watch the end of the world during the year 5 billion. The trick to psychic paper, is the holder can make it appear as anything he wants it to appear to the person he shows it to… fake invitations, fake ID, or sometimes comically, it can give away if you're interested in the other person. Then as the other guests arrived on board, Rose marvels at their alien appearance, and yet how everybody spoke English? "No, you're just hearing it. It's a gift of the TARDIS. The telepathic field gets inside your brain. It translates." The Doctor explains to his new companion.
Rose becomes overwhelmed by the alieness of her surroundings and leaves the room. She's also upset at how the Doctor refuses to talk about his past with her. To make her feel better, he asks Rose to hand him her mobile phone and with a little "jiggety-pokery" he hands it back to her and says she can now make calls from any time period she's in. Rose tests this out, and calls her Mum, Jacky back home. Jacky, who is at home doing the laundry, is concerned at how Rose sounds, and Rose promises her mother that right now, "I'm on top of the world", she says as she looks down over the planet.
